Job Description
The candidate will provide site capital engineering leadership with a focus on development of site technical resources and engineering discipline coordination and support for capital projects at Albemarle’s Amsterdam Plant. Albemarle Corporation plant designs shall be safe, operable, economical, and environmentally sound. The candidate will have overall responsibility for the execution of Albemarle’s Project Process (APP) as it applies to front end development, detailed design, procurement, construction, and commissioning & startup. The candidate will also provide leadership for technical support for troubleshooting, problem solving, and failure analysis as well as strategic development related to long term improvement of facilities and infrastructure.
Candidate must be initiative-taking to ensure designs of Albemarle projects are accomplished within budget & schedule and represent Albemarle’s technical requirements. Responsibilities will include site oversight and functional leadership for all engineering disciplines including civil, mechanical, electrical instrumentation & controls, and corporate standards and specifications.

Capital Design

Provide proactive engineering input to capital project scope, budget and schedule development as required

Drive collaboration with other site departments to ensure best utilization of resources and provide opportunity for all employees to work together for a single site focus

Develop conceptual and front-end engineering designs for capital projects that will be outsourced for detailed design

Ensure all design packages and solutions are within the scope of the capital project and are accurate, workable, economical, and in compliance with all pertinent standards, codes, and specifications

Provide guidance on outsourced engineering staffing for projects

Assist with development of project execution plans and contractor selection

Provide guidance and oversight of outsourced capital projects detailed design activities, special studies, etc.

Monitor and review contractor activities and implement necessary corrective actions

Provide technical advice to construction management personnel to assure a safe and accurate installation of project electrical equipment

Ensure all installation issues, commissioning, start-up, and site training related to modern designs and installations are properly addressed, documented, and shared for lessons learned

Ensure best in class project documentation and design requirements documentation
Technical Service

Maintain informed, comprehensive knowledge of Albemarle Corporation facilities and processes

Forecast the future engineering needs of the site to obtain wide-ranging technical support activities and evaluation efforts, including advanced troubleshooting, problem solving, and failure analysis related to installations

Provide reliable solutions to modify operating facilities to improve safety and/or reduce costs

Maintain current knowledge of industry standards, regulations, and research new developments in theory and application in various engineering field and deploy new technologies as appropriate on capital projects or in support of technical problems

Provide specific discipline expertise to assure continuity and maintenance of Albemarle Corporation Engineering Specifications and Standards, including best practice documentation for domestic and international locations
Management

Responsible for managing the operation and staffing of the site engineering organization including corporate assignees and external contracted resources

Help to recruit, manage, and develop/train site engineering personnel and throughout the company
Accountabilities

Ensure that project funding estimate input for all engineering disciplines are compiled and submitted correctly and timely with a high degree of accuracy

Ensure design schedules and personnel are matched to meet or exceed desired project completion, cost, quality, and technical expectations

Ensure that designs and installations follow all codes, regulations, and Albemarle Corporation and industry standards and specifications
-
Ensure that technical content and quality of designs and installation meet requirements of project scopes
-
Retain and develop internal engineering resources
Essential Qualifications
-
BS or MS (a plus) in Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering
-
15+ years of experience in the Chemical Process Industry or similar industry
-
Extensive experience in multi-discipline design of complex chemical manufacturing facilities with specific experience of coordinating and organizing detailed engineering
-
Ability to judge the quality of engineering and construction documents
-
Exhibit drive to execute engineering designs for absolute lowest cost
-
Highly familiar with applicable design and building codes with knowledge of how to apply across the site

Thorough understanding of engineering productivity measurement
-
Excellent Computer skills – Word, Excel, AutoCAD, Lotus Approach

Considerable experience in the application and utilization of engineering design tools used by both Owner organizations and Contractor organizations
